Manuel Pacheco, President Emeritus of the University of Arizona, has often been honored for his many achievements, but the newest accolade looks like it will stand for quite a long time.

At a November reception UA President Robert Shelton and President Emeritus Peter Likins were on hand to unveil a tribute wall at the Manuel Pacheco Integrated Learning Center, 1500 E. University Blvd. Pacheco, who served as president from 1991 to 1997, was instrumental in the building of the ILC and the Student Union Memorial Center at a time when many believed it was an either/or choice.

Pacheco is one of 12 siblings who made it through college. Even his mother was a scholastic achiever.

“Impressively, when my youngest brother was a junior in high school and my mother was close to 60, she decided it was her turn to go to college where I did,” Pacheco says. “The only difference is that she graduated summa cum laude and I didn’t. There are four doctorates among us, and everyone, all 12, completed academic and professional degrees.”
