Luz Sarmina

Luz Sarmina-Gutierrez, CEO of Valle del Sol, is the first Latina inducted into ASU’s College of Public Programs Alumni Hall of Fame. She and two others were honored at an awards lunch in late October.

Sarmina-Gutierrez, who joined Valle del Sol in 1995, has seen the nonprofit’s annual revenues increase from $2.5 million to $13.5 million. She earned a master’s degree in social work in 1976 and worked in nonprofit, private and government sectors. By 1992 she oversaw a budget of more than $60 million for statewide aging and community services administrations as assistant director for the state’s Department of Economic Security.

“Throughout my life, I have been committed to addressing Latino issues,” Sarmina-Gutierrez says. “I believe that we are a people who are honest, hard working and want a better life for our families. And, I have spoken up on our behalf, because many of us do not even know we have a voice. Because of this I commend ASU’s Public Programs for selecting a Latina for this Hall of Fame award.”
