The fifth annual Arizona Latina Trailblazers community celebration was a big success. With generous support from Salt River Project, Latino Perspectives Magazine and the Raul H. Castro Institute at Phoenix College hosted a fun-filled evening in honor of Guadalupe Huerta, Narcisa Monreal Espinoza, Angie Ruiz Tewksbury, and State Senator Anna Tovar. Over 200 guests enjoyed inspiring video vignettes about the lives of these remarkable women, hors d’oeuvres, and a special musical performance by Carmela Ramirez and her band, Carmela y Más. (Click here to watch the video vignettes).

Kathleen Mascareñas, media relations specialist at SRP, served as the event’s emcee. The program included remarks by Dr. Anna Solley, President of Phoenix College; Ricardo Torres, Publisher of LPM; and Tony Moya, Manager of Latino Relations at SRP.

On November 29, 2012, Latino Perspectives Magazine, the Raul H. Castro Institute at Phoenix College and SRP hosted the fifth edition of this annual event at the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Phoenix.

Over 200 guests gathered for a luncheon acknowledging the work of first responders and those serving in the Military, the Reserves, and the National Guard. Emmy Award-winning journalist and CBS5 news anchor, Catherine Anaya, served as emcee along with Phoenix City Manager, David Cavazos. During the ceremony, we shone a light on the individuals profiled throughout the year in LPM:

Monica Abril Aragon, Resource Manager Craftsman, Arizona Air National Guard; Patrick Camuñez, Captain, Arizona Army National Guard; Jimmy Chavez, Sergeant, Arizona Department of Public Safety; Daniel V. García, Chief, Phoenix Police Department; Edward Muñoz, former Chief, San Luis Police Department; Daniel Rincon, Sergeant, Scottsdale Police Department; Tom Ryff, Chief, Tempe Police Department; Diana Tapia-Williams, Detective, Mesa Police Department; Adam M. Tellez, Crime Prevention Specialist, Goodyear Police Department; Roberto A. Villaseñor, Chief, Tucson Police Department.

Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton delivered welcoming remarks. He shared with the audience the municipality’s efforts to recruit, retain and support veterans. Other speakers at the event included Carrie Young, a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force and Senior Director of Corporate Operation Services for SRP; Elisa de la Vara, District Director, Office of U.S. Rep. Ed Pastor; Anna Solley, President of Phoenix College and Ricardo Torres, Publisher of LPM.

David Gonzales, U.S. Marshal for the District of Arizona and Major General Hugo Salazar, the Adjutant General, Arizona National Guard, served as keynote speakers.

As Arizona celebrates its Centennial year, community members gathered to celebrate four women at the fourth annual Arizona Latina Trailblazers event, March 28, 2012, at the Phoenix Art Museum. Cheers, applause and tears greeted the stories of Amanda Aguirre, the first Latina to represent the Yuma area in the state legislature in over 130 years; Liz Archuleta, who became the first Latina elected to the Coconino County Board of Supervisors in 120 years; Terri Cruz, who is recognized as the “mother” of Chicanos por la Causa; and Anna Maria Chávez, the first Hispanic woman to serve as president/CEO of the Girl Scouts of the USA in its 100-year history.

The celebration served as a backdrop for the presentation of a booklet and digital stories highlighting key aspects of the women’s lives. Kathleen Mascareñas, media relations specialist for SRP, served as the event’s emcee. Each guest at the event received a copy of Arizona Latina Trailblazers: Stories of Courage, Hope and Determination: Volume IV, by Jean Reynolds. Thanks to the support of the event’s sponsors, copies also will be distributed to all public libraries in the state.

CBS 5 News chief journalist Catherine Anaya and Phoenix City Manager David Cavazos

A World War II ace fighter pilot and 11 community heroes were honored at the Fourth Annual Salute Honoring Those Who Serve event at the at the Wyndham Hotel in downtown Phoenix on November 16, presented by Latino Perspectives Magazine, the Raul H. Castro Institute (RCI) at Phoenix College and SRP. 

CBS 5 News chief journalist Catherine Anaya and Phoenix City Manager David Cavazos emceed the event. With family members in attendance, tribute was paid to the bravery and leadership exhibited by sons and daughters, friends and neighbors, and mothers and fathers who have proudly served and are serving our nation. 

The luncheon paid special tribute to the accomplishments of the late Arthur Van Haren Jr., one of Arizona’s most decorated fighter pilots. A Legacy of Courage: The Story of Arthur Van Haren Jr., written by historian Jean Reynolds, was presented at the event as the latest addition to a collection of seven books published through a partnership between Latino Perspectives Magazine and RCI. 

To date, over 2,500 copies of the books commemorating the lives and achievements of Arizona’s notable Latinos have been donated to public libraries and high schools in the state. Digital 

versions have been contributed to the state library’s Arizona Memory Project, where they are accessed on average 600 times each month by users all over the world. 

“Perhaps the best way we can repay our debt to those who have served so selflessly is to tell their stories in order to inspire a new generation of leaders to serve our country and our state,” said Phoenix College president Anna Solley, Ph.D.

Speakers and special guests at the luncheon included Diane Van Haren Halvorson; Mayor-elect Greg Stanton; Peter Hayes, SRP’s senior vice president of community affairs, and Elisa de la Vara, district director for the office of Congressman Ed Pastor.

We had a grand time this past September 9, celebrating our anniversary with LPM readers and friends. 

More than 500 guests enjoyed the fiesta at the Herberger Theater Center in downtown Phoenix and were treated to the live music of Gustavo Angeles and Resonancia, scrumptious Mexican fare from Tortas Paquimé and an opportunity to view the art exhibit Arizona Centennial Artists: Arizona’s Early Women Artists, on view at the Herberger Theater Art Gallery.
