The League of United Latin Amer­i­can Cit­i­zens (LULAC) held their national con­ven­tion in July, where Ari­zo­nans were hon­ored at the pres­i­den­tial ban­quet. Pima County Sher­iff Clarence Dup­nik, Santa Cruz County Sher­iff Anto­nio “Tony” Estrada and Tuc­son Coun­cil­man Richard Fim­bres each received the Rosa Ros­ales Pres­i­den­tial Cita­tion for their lead­er­ship and advocacy roles.

Glo­ria Abril has been appointed vice pres­i­dent of the Phoenix chap­ter of the National Alliance on Men­tal Ill­ness (NAMI). Abril cur­rently leads fam­ily sup­port groups in Eng­lish and Span­ish, and has taught Fam­ily to Fam­ily classes.

Medina joins 21st Century Vitamins

Martha Med­ina has accepted a posi­tion as direc­tor of qual­ity con­trol with Phoenix-based 21st Cen­tury Vit­a­mins, one of the largest inter­na­tional man­u­fac­tur­ers of dietary sup­ple­ments in the United States. Medina was pre­vi­ously direc­tor of qual­ity, research and devel­op­ment with Inno­v­a­tive Brands. She has her master’s and doc­tor­ate degrees in chem­istry from Ari­zona State University.

Escamilla named to Suns Nite Hoops board

Ser­gio Escamilla, a per­sonal injury attor­ney who heads up Escamilla Law Group, PLLC, was recently named to the Suns Nite Hoops (SNH) board of direc­tors. SNH is ded­i­cated to young adults in need of voca­tional devel­op­ment, edu­ca­tional advance­ment and life-skills enhance­ment. Ser­vices are gratis for young men 18 to 25 years of age.

Arellano moves to federal immigration court

Judge Sil­via Arel­lano has been appointed to a fed­eral judge­ship in the Fed­eral Immi­gra­tion Court. She will go through train­ing in Wash­ing­ton, D.C., with other newly hired judges from around the United States. Prior to this appoint­ment she served as the pub­lic fidu­ciary, and was also a Supe­rior Court judge for close to 20 years.

Medina chosen for ALL IN program

The National His­pana Lead­er­ship Insti­tute (NHLI) selected 22 Latina non­profit pro­fes­sion­als for their inau­gural Advanc­ing Latina Lead­ers in Non­prof­its (ALL IN) Pro­gram. Joyce Med­ina, junior pro­gram offi­cer for edu­ca­tion with the Ari­zona Com­mu­nity Foun­da­tion, was among those selected.
